Our flight was at 9:30, so it was up early and straight out to the airport. Before we left the hotel, Dangerous met us to say goodbye - he's heading back today to climb Jebel Toubkal. In planning our trip, that was an option for us, but we decided against it due to limited time, so we were a little envious of him as he headed off.
Seven of us left around the same time (Maggie was on our flight), so we had time to say final goodbyes at the airport.
Arriving in Lisbon, we were a little nervous about our bags. Incredibly, we went from no bags in Casablanca, to being the first bags off the carousel!!
We then headed straight out the door to pick up our campervan, our home for the next nine days. This was the first time I've ever driven a left hand drive vehicle so was a little nervous. It's also been about 25 years since I drove on the right side of the road, so should be a good experience.
After getting lost a few times (no GPS and no phones with 3G) we finally found our camp ground. Once booked in, we immediately headed into town to wander around and get our bearings.
Immediate impressions - WOW! What amazing city. With its beautiful buildings, tramways, cobbled streets, tiled footpaths, incredible statues & monuments, to the stunning Praca do Comercio square at the bottom of town that sits in front of the Rio Tejo, it is just beautiful!
There's almost too much to take in. And as for photos, every where you look, every way you turn, there is another photo opportunity! It's easy to go crazy and thank god for the digital age!!!
One of our first jobs was to get a SIM card for my phone, so we can more easily negotiate our way around Portugal. This turned out to be hilarious! We walked into the Vodafone store and went straight to the counter. We were told, that we needed to take a ticket and then wait our turn to be served - fair enough! We duly went to the machine and got our ticket - number 77. About 10 seconds later, the young girl that told us to get a ticket calls out "77" - we nearly wet ourselves!!!!
SIM card sorted, it was back out to the streets of Lisbon. Just spent the next few hours wandering around and trying to soak it all in. It really is a stunning city.
After a few hours, it was time for dinner in one of the many restaurants in the pedestrian only streets. It was great to sit, eat and drink and watch the world go by. So much to see.
Then it was back on the 714 bus and out to the campground for the night.
