Nightmare may be a slight exaggeration, but after our outstanding start to the trip we ended up having a bit of a 'mare when we arrived in Hong Kong.
Flying into Hong Kong was nothing short of spectacular. For the last 5 or so minutes of the descent we were in thick cloud, pouring rain and a bit of rocking and rolling. Just before we touched down all hell broke loose and the heavens opened up - I've never flown, let alone landed, through such a torrential downpour. The rain was so thick, we couldn't see out to the end of the wing. As we quickly learnt, July is monsoon season, so this isn't that unusual apparently!
Once we touched down it got even more spectacular with an incredible lightening display and wind and thunder so loud that it shook the plane. All pretty exciting stuff and thoroughly entertaining.
60 minutes later and it wasn't so funny. We were still sitting on the tarmac because, with all the lightening, it was too dangerous for the ground crew to attend to the plane.
And then it got worse. We finally got off the plane with only 10 minutes to go until our plane to London left. There were about 30 people on the plane in the same situation as us, but 10 of us didn't have a boarding pass for the London leg. Buggered if I know why we didn't have one and the others did?? So we became the unlucky ones and we all watched the plane fly off without us.
The story didn't get any better for quite some time, with the Cathay Pacific staff being bloody hopeless at keeping us informed. Only with constant pestering for about two hours did we finally get any information as to what the hell was going on. Thankfully we all ended up getting on to the next flight that left 3 hours after our original - well it was supposed to anyway. But this one got delayed for another hour (while we sat in the plane).
To cap it off, they've made no promises about our bags being onboard, but at least we're on our way.
Update on the bags to follow.........
